Five ways to make the city feel wild
Living in the city means being deliberate about adventure. It won't find you the way it does on a mountain trail, so you have to go looking for it. The good news is that most of it is already there, hiding in plain sight.
Change the route, every time. A new street is a new forest of scents. Turn left where you always turn right and watch how your dog's whole body wakes up.
Hunt for green. Parks, riverbanks, old railway lines, cemeteries with quiet paths. Every city has pockets of wild if you know where to look. Make a list and work through it.
Let the nose lead. Set a rule for one walk a week: no pulling, no hurrying, no phone. Your dog picks the pace and the direction. You just follow.
Train for the city, not against it. Trams, cyclists, crowded squares and café terraces are part of the territory. Short, calm sessions in busy spots build a dog that's confident anywhere, not one that's constantly on edge.
Go early or go late. Dawn and dusk are when the city belongs to the dogs. Fewer people, cooler air, and a quiet that lets the instincts come out.
What to carry
Water and a collapsible bowl, especially on hot pavement days
A long line for the parks where off-leash isn't allowed
A few high-value treats made from real meat, for the moments that need it
Poop bags, always more than you think you'll need
The rule that matters most
The city moves fast. Your dog doesn't have to. A walk that takes twice as long and covers half the distance is still a better walk, if they came home with their nose full of the world and their instincts fed.
